DESCRIPTION
Many of us remember the words of J.F.K. In his inaugural address, “Ask not what your country can do for you, but rather what you can do for your country.” Many also will recite the words of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., “I have a dream.” Many great speeches in our history are remembered because they appealed to a greater good. As Joshua nears his death he gives a farewell address to both his leaders and to the entire nation of Israel. In his masterful speech he directs the attention of those who will come after him to continue to give glory to God.
Throughout Joshua’s life he has witnessed victory and defeat due to the obedience (or lack of obedience) of Israel to God. Throughout his discourses he calls and challenges the leaders and the nation to stay focused on reverencing God and not looking to other god’s or idols. He ends his address by letting the nation know that they have the volition to choose who they want to worship, but as for Joshua and his household, they will serve the Lord.
Joshua lived his life obediently to God and even in difficult times continued to pursue Him. May we continue to seek God’s face and worship Him only!
